Frederick Diers, 61, of Elkader died November 17, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

He was born in Elkader on February 8, 1944, to Vernon and Helen (Knudson) Diers. He grew up on the family farm near Clayton Center and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1962. He then served as DHIA Supervisor for Clayton County. On July 10, 1971, he was united in marriage to Elaine Rahn in Brookville, IL. They began farming near Lanark, IL where they lived for fifteen years and had two wonderful children, Steven and Kristine.

The family moved to Elkader in 1987, where Tom took over his father's business, Diers Insurance Agency.

His love of farm toy collecting led to a weekend business of traveling to farm toy shows throughout the Midwest. The creation of Tiny Boys Toys with Pat Keleher charmed audiences and other toy dealers at whatever show they attended. Their partnership lasted over twelve years, longer than many marriages Tom joked.

After serving as a city council member for two years, he assumed the mayor's position for the next twelve years. No matter where he went, he pushed the improvement of the city in which he lived. One of his proudest moments was when Elkader received the Great American Main Street Award in 2001, the smallest town to win the national award.

He was active in the Elkader Lions club serving various roles, the Elkader Economic Development and Bethany Lutheran Church. He was also a long suffering Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed growing up following the Milwaukee Braves. He enjoyed going to auctions, discussing farm toy collectibles including showing off his own collection as well as spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Rahn) Diers, Elkader; his son, Steven (Beth Anne) Diers, Monona; his daughter, Kristine Diers, West Des Moines; his mother, Helen Diers, Elkader; his brother, Richard (Lorna) Diers, Okinawa, Japan; his sister, Mary (Jay) Satinsky, Gurnee, IL; his uncle, Clyde Knudson, Dallas, TX; and beloved relatives, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one impressive toy collection! Preceding him in death were his father, Vernon, foster brothers Leo Conway and Charles Adams, and maternal and paternal grandparents. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
