Shirley graduated from Normal Community High School on May 18, 1954. She began working for Industrial Casualty Insurance Company as a bookkeeper. She was united in marriage to Donald Gene Harper in Hudson, Illinois on March 11, 1955. She then began working for Blakes Grocery Store in Hudson. Don was inducted into the Army in November of 1956. He was sent to California and Shirley joined him in 1957 and the lived in Inglewood, California. Shirley was employed in the Office at McDonald Aircraft Company. Don was sent to Germany and Shirley returned to Hudson, Illinois, when he returned, they farmed for several years in Hudson area before moving their family to Garden Grove, Iowa in 1967. Shirley helped farm and was also City Clerk for the town of Garden Grove, Iowa for over 10 years. Shirley and Don divorced. Shirley married Austin (Ozzie) Smith, following their divorce they still remained friends. Shirley retired and moved to Osceola. She was very active, volunteering, especially at her church, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she has served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder and chairman of the Church Board. She was also a member of the Clarke County Hospital Auxiliary, sometime helping at the gift shop. In 2000, Shirley met Harold Carson from Murray and they enjoyed many good years attending dances.
Shirley was preceded in death by her son Steven Dale Harper.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory; son, Ron (Dorinda) Harper of Osceola, IA, son, Gregory Alan Harper of Roland, IA, daughter, Kelly (Dave Chamberlain) Harper of Creston, IA, daughter, Sharon (Shawn) Woods of Humeston, IA, grandchildren, Carly (Jason) Voltz, Erika Harper and Elizabeth Tenbrook, Garrett Harper and Rob Trenkle, Wesley (Rebecca) Harper, Parker Harper, Ian (Amanda) Harper, Corry Johnson & Alexi Groumoutis, Sadie (Travis) Johnson, and Shay; great grandchildren, George, Amelia, Emalee, Ryan, Macy, Nathan, Colt and Hunter, as well as other relatives and many friends.
