She married her first husband, Herman Mestmacher on 26 Aug 1932 in Butte County, SD. They had 7 children, 3 dying at a young age. In 1944, Bessie moved the family to Toppenish, WA with Herman following after he sold the ranch in Iowa. In 1946, Bessie & Herman separated. They divorced in 1965 after 19 years of separation. She later married Frank William Wilks. Both husbands predeceased her.
Bessie regularly enjoyed the fellowship with others at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, where she believed the Bible's promise of a future resurrection to a paradise earth.
Bessie passed away in Custer on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the age of 83.
A graveside service was held Thursday, March 27, at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis.
