US Congressman. He was the grandson of Dr. Manasseh Cutler, prominent advocate for Ohio's creation, and son of Judge Ephraim Cutler, one of Ohio's founders. William attended Ohio University and became a farmer and businessman. He was a member of the Ohio House from 1844 to 1847 and served as Speaker in his last term. He became active in several companies and banks and was president of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad from 1850 to 1860. Cutler was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican in 1860 and served one term. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection, after which he returned to the Marietta and Cincinnati. This line later became the famed Baltimore and Ohio, or B & O.
