August and Elise Wellsandt

August Wellsandt was born November 12, 1865 in West Preussen, Germany to Johann and Henrietta (Paglow) Wellsandt. He migrated to the United States with his grothers Gustav and Louis in 1886 at the age of twenty. After a few months in Nebraska he traveled by train to Walla Walla where he worked as a farm hand. In the fall of 1886 he came to Ritzville, and the following year he purchased a relinquishment; a farm six miles east of Ritzville.

On September 9, 1894, August married Elise Seeger, also a native of Germany. Elise (Lizzie) was born July 12, 1877 in Schwezien Pommern, Germany to Frederich and Caroline (Boesel) Seeger. Elise's family migrated to Sprague in 1886. Elise began work at the age of twelve in a hotel in Sprague, giving all of her two dollars a week wages to help support her parents.

Not infrequently, Mr. and Mrs. Wellsandt harnessed a team of horses and covered the long journey from the farm to Sprague, where they sold their butter and eggs to return with a load of old railroad ties for firewood.

For entertainment the Wellsandts and neighbors would get together at the farm home to visit, eat and dance to the music of accordions and violins.

Due to illness August was forced to give up farming in 1909, leasing the farm to relatives. Afterseveral years spent in Spokane and Walla Walla, he recovered fully and took up farming about one mile east of Ritzville, developing the farm from scratch, digging a well and breaking sod.

In 1939 they left the farm to retire and built a home in Ritzville located at 209 West Third.

In all of the years of farming near Ritzville the Wellsandts never lacked for work or company. They always welcomed visitors, as well as made a home for several boys who needed a whome while attending school in Ritzville. There were always chores for boys who were willing to work for their board and room.
