Janet Ruth Coldwell, 53, Independence, Mo., passed away in her sleep at home Sunday, August 1, 2004. She fought a determined and courageous battle with cancer that claimed her life.

Janet was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Henry B. and Lois H. Foster, and was active in girl scouting along with her mother and earned her Curved Bar.

She was baptized a Christian in her family church. She was a fashion model for Montgomery Wards Blue Ridge Mall for several years.

Graduating from Raytown South HS and later Baker University, she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She earned her masters degree from Webster University and was an elementary educator/librarian with the Independence, Mo., School District for 31 years before retiring in 2003. She felt blessed being around children and cherished all the wonderful friends she made through her career.

She was a past member of Delta Kappa Gamma and loved cooking, enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening, and the care and feeding of her backyard birds.

She was a faithful and loving companion to her husband, Bob, whom she married in 1974; a devoted mother to her children; and loved her extended family very much. She served as den mother in Pack 257 Beacon Heights Community of Christ church and was an ardent supporter of everything her family did. Janet had Christ in her heart, lived her life as a practicing Christian and devoutly followed the golden rule.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bob of the home; twin sons, Ben and Bryan of Blue Springs, Mo.; dear friend for life, her mother of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Larry Foster of Raymore, Mo.; mother-in-law, Mary Coldwell of Independence, Mo.; and brothers and sisters-in-law with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with funeral services from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence, followed by a private family burial service. Memorials can be made to Kansas City Hospice, Cancer Action, and the Janet R. Coldwell Memorial Educational Fund, c/o The School District of Independence Foundation, Inc.
