Sarah Hopkins Rice

Sarah Hopkins Rice died peacefully in her sleep at her residence in Houston, Texas, on October 12, 2015. Born October 5, 1946, she had just observed her 69th birthday.

Born in Galveston, Texas at St. Mary’s Infirmary, her parents were John (Jack) Metcalf Hopkins and Elise Barthelme Hopkins, both deceased. She was the youngest of five children: Jack, Jean, Bart (all deceased) and Elise Hopkins Stephens of Galveston.

Growing up in Galveston, Sarah attended Alamo Elementary and Lovenberg Jr. High. The family moved to Houston in 1961 and Sarah graduated from Lamar High School.
She spent many summers at Camp Mystic in the Hill Country where her mother had a ranch outside Kerrville.
Sarah attended and graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. It was there that she met and later married John Rice, the son of Dr. and Mrs. John S. Rice of Cleburne, Texas.

Sarah taught math at Central Middle School in Galveston for a number of years. After retiring from GISD, she enjoyed teaching a few more years at Galveston Catholic School. She took pride in filling her classrooms with stimulating educational materials and finding ways to involve and motivate her students.
A long standing member of Mensa, Sarah read voraciously, earned her M.A. at the University of Houston, and spent her leisure time taking further courses, tutoring students in her home and writing prose and poetry.

Sarah is survived by her son John Rice (Kim) and two grandchildren, John Henry Rice and Morgan Elise Rice of Kingwood, Texas; her cousins Frederick and Steven Barthelme of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; nephews Bart (Kat) Hopkins, Jr. of Galveston, Brett (Mary Sue) Hopkins of League City, Brock Hopkins of California; nieces Brenda Hopkins Pacini of Houston, and Gwen Hopkins formerly of Austin; nephews James Briscoe Stephens of Memphis, Tennessee and Russell Barthelme Stephens (Lisa) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A private burial and graveside blessing by Deacon Doug Matthews was held Friday, October 16, at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas.
