Emma Lura Johnson, 89, of Sweet Home died Friday.

Emma was born to David Newton Johnson, and Evelyn G Goodwin Johnson in Los Angeles. They later moved to Texas then moved to Portland in 1926. There she graduated from Washington High School in 1934. She worked at Kress Dime Store and married Merritt Volley Eddy July 31, 1938, and John Johnson Sept. 14, 1940 in Stevenson, Wash.

Emma Lou and John made their first home in Vancouver, Wash., where Emma Lou was a housewife and mother while John worked in the Vancouver ship yards. She survived the Depression and war years and saved everything.

In 1947, Emma Lou and John built a new house in Molalla, where Emma Lou worked in the strawberry and bean fields as field boss. In 1958, the family moved to Lebanon and then Sweet Home in 1959. They opened and operated Ace Home Supply until retiring in 1979. Emma Lou enjoyed the customers and took over the paint and wallpaper department and created a craft corner.

She was active in the BPOE Elkettes and enjoyed all activities including craft and bake sales. She enjoyed picking flowers, mushrooms, pine cones and wild berries. She spent much of her time driving around with her husband, enjoying the local scenery.

After retiring, she traveled extensively across the United States and Canada with her husband. Their biggest enjoyment was the fishing, hunting and camping excursions. They were always in competition with each other as to who caught the biggest or most fish.

Emma Lu is survived by son Raymond Eddy-Johnson; daughter Beverly Crocker; grandchildren Teresa Johnson, John Johnson, Matt Crocker, Tina Crocker and Angie Crocker; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John Morgan Johnson in March of this year and sister Pauline Bellamy in 1993.

Viewing will be Thursday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be Friday at Gilliland Cemetery.
