In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilmore, Richard, and Elvin; a sister, Mae Sorell; and a special daughter-in-law, Tonya Loving Jones.
Ernie served as Farm Manager for Marantha Farm in Palmyra. He loved Bluegrass music and going shopping and out to eat. He was a person of fun and jokes. He always acted serious about everything and then made you laugh at him. Everyone that knew him knew he would do anything for anyone and they loved him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Peggy Roberts Payne of Scottsville; three children, Tommy, Johnny, and Theresa, all of Louisa; three step-sons, Ricky Kendrick, Charles Kendrick and wife, Jan all of Palmyra, and Dwane Jones of Scottsville; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including a very special grandson whom Ernie thought of as a son, D.J. Jones and his fiancée, Danielle of Scottsville; two brothers, Martin Payne and wife, Virginia of Mineral, and Marvin Payne and wife, Vernelle of Goochland; two sisters, Nancy Hodges of Goochland, and Joyce Ann Barden and husband, Ed of Powhatan; and a number of nieces and nephews, including a very special niece, Nancy Lee Morrison and husband, Riley of Goochland.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, October 16, 2015, at Antioch Baptist Church by the Reverend James C. Jetton.
