Mrs. Mabel Olen Johnson Cape, 85, of Statesville, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 8, 2015. Born June 30, 1929 in Iredell County, she was the daughter of the late James Edgar (Ed) Johnson and Mary Eva Menscer Johnson. She attended Harmony School and on December 13, 1950 was married to Parker Cape who died February 19, 2002. She was raised on the farm and worked at Monleigh Shirt Factory, Bassett Furniture, and Bernhardt Furniture before retiring. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mocksville and was an avid gardener, enjoyed working in her flowers and cooking.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by grandson, Jeremy Moorefield; one brother, Thomas Reece Johnson; two sisters, Pauline Stroud and Evelyn Jarrett; along with Odell Smith who was raised in the Johnson home.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Mary Ann Campbell (Mike) of Harmony and Nancy Sue Chapman (Fred Jr.) of Stony Point; two sons, Wayne Edgar Cape (Ann) of Statesville and Jerry Moorefield of Statesville. Grandchildren are: Dana Stewart (Damon), Timothy Cape (Tabitha), Denise Carlisi (Tony), Amanda Perry (Will), Heather Griffin (Mickey), Kimberly Parlier (Joe), Kelsey Rae Chapman, Jackie Parker (Brandon), and two step-grandchildren, Casey and Cassidy Campbell. Fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, along with one sister, Ellen Beckham of Statesville, three brothers, Harold Vance Johnson (Rachel) of Statesville, Ray Frank Johnson “Peanut” and wife Nancy of Lincolnton, and James Reece Johnson (Hilda) of Statesville, also survives.

A service to celebrate the life of Mabel Cape will be conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church in Mocksville with Rev. Jim Gryder and Rev. Danny Castle officiating. Mrs. Cape will lie in state at the church thirty minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Hunter Cape, Olin Cape, Will Perry, Damon Stewart, Taylor Stewart, and Tony Carlissi. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry and Betty Gibson, Joe and Betty Gantt, and Peggy Campbell. The family will visit with friends on Monday evening 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home.
