Lance Corporal Dominic Eugene Schraft, 19, of Camp Pendleton, Calif., formerly of Vienna, MO., departed this life on Monday morning, October 5, 2015, at Camp Pendleton, California. Dominic was born on April 21, 1996, at Rolla, a son of Donald Eugene and Sabrina Lynn (Dittman) Schraft.

Dominic enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August 2014. Lance Corporal Schraft was assigned to Battery R, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, and served as a field radio operator and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He was a 2014 graduate of the Maries R-1 School System, Vienna, and was on both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Dominic enjoyed hunting, fishing, and martial arts.

Those left to mourn the passing of Dominic include his parents, Donald and Sabrina Schraft, Vienna; three brothers, Cpl. Robert Schraft, Okinawa, Japan, Timothy Schraft and Danny Schraft both of Vienna; one sister, Teresa Schraft, Vienna; two nieces, Elizabeth and Abagail; his paternal grandparents, Barbara and Leroy Bailey, Vichy; his maternal grandmother, Flora Joyce Dittman, Berea, Ky.; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ralph Schraft; maternal grandfather, Martin Dittman; one uncle, Danny Dittman; and one cousin, Cody Dittman. Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m., Monday, October 19, 2015, in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, 406 South Main Street, Vienna, Mo., and 9 - 10 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2015 in the First Baptist Church, 1004 Highway 63 South, Vienna, MO.

Funeral services will be conducted for Lance Corporal Schraft at 10 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2015, in the First Baptist Church, Vienna, with Navy Chaplain Jeremy Bennett officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in the Little Flock Cemetery 10218 Maries Road 332, Vienna.

A Marine found dead at a shooting range at Camp Pendleton in California is from central Missouri.

Lance Corporal Dominic E. Schraft, 19 of Vienna, was found dead of a gunshot wound the head Monday evening. The incident is under investigation.

Officials at the base north of San Diego say he was taking part in a training exercise in which live ammunition was used.

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited by the U.S. Marine Corps and the family to accompany their Hero, LCpl Dominic E. Schraft to the airport on his journey home to Missouri, we would be honored to do so.

LCpl Schraft is survived by his parents, and several siblings, 1 brother who is also a Marine.

Schraft was assigned to Battery R, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

He joined the Marine Corps in August 2014, just over a year, and served as a field radio operator. He had not served any deployments.

His awards include the National Defense Service medal and Global War on Terrorism Service medal.

Schraft graduated from Vienna High School in 2014

Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman stated on the sheriff's office Facebook page that he is asking all businesses and residents in Maries County to place yellow ribbons on their buildings, residences or mailboxes to show their support for Schraft.

"We will be providing ribbons at the sheriff's office that people can pick up this weekend," Heitman said.

Terry Brookshire, who had Schraft for a student, remembers him as good student. He was "pretty quiet, but the type of kid with a good work ethic and one you could trust to complete a job and do it right."

The Patriot Guard Riders have been honored with a request from the family of Active Duty United States Marine Dominic Eugene Schraft to escort their son and stand a flag line to honor this young hero. Lance Corporal Schraft passed away at Camp Pendleton, CA on 5 October 2015 at the age of 19. His death is still under investigation.

This will be a multi-phase, multi-day mission. LCpl Schraft was a field radio operator and is a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

PHASE I – HERO ARRIVAL – FRIDAY 16 OCTOBER 2015:

LCpl Schraft’s remains will arrive at Lambert-St Louis International Airport on Friday 16 October 2015. Riders will stage at 1700 (5:00pm) at the Southwest Airlines Cargo, Cargo City located at 9813 Air Cargo Road in St Louis (Cell Phone Lot 2, St Louis International Airport), east end of the airport complex. There will be a mandatory ride meeting at 1715 (5:15pm). Riders who do not attend the meeting will not be permitted ride during the escort. Following the dignified transfer, an escort to Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna, MO will commence. This escort will involve a total distance of approximately 125 miles. Large flags are highly discouraged due to the distance involved. There will be one rest/fuel stop at the Mobil Station at Exit 240 on Interstate 44 west of St Louis. This will also allow riders from other areas to join the remainder of the escort. This will be an after dark mission so dress appropriately and please HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. The Missouri State Highway Patrol, along with other law enforcement agencies will lead the escort from St Louis to Vienna, MO. The Ride Captain in Charge (RCIC) for Phase I of this mission will be Senior Ride Captain Robert “Bob” Smith.

PHASE II – VISITATION – MONDAY 19 OCTOBER 2015:

Visitation will be held on Monday 19 October 2015 from 1600-1900 (4:00pm-7:00pm) at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home located at 406 S. Main Street in Vienna, MO 65582. Riders will stage at the funeral home at 1500 (3:00pm) followed by a briefing at 1515 (3:15pm). PGR personnel will be on scene to direct riders/cages to designated parking areas. Please support the visitation as you are able to do.

PHASE III – FUNERAL SERVICE – TUESDAY 20 OCTOBER 2015:

The funeral service for LCpl Schraft will be held on Tuesday 20 October 2015 at the First Baptist Church located at 1004 U.S. Highway 63 in Vienna, MO 65582. There will be visitation from 0900-1000 (9:00am-10:00am) followed by the funeral service at 10:00am. Riders will stage at 0815 (8:15am) followed by a briefing at 0830 (8:30am). At the conclusion of the funeral, LCpl Schraft will be escorted to his final resting place at the Little Flock Cemetery located approximately 4 miles.
