Duane Paul Berthoux, was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Jerseyville, Illinois. He was the oldest child of Paul Horace and Esther Virginia (Richey) Berthoux.

Duane's first job experience was as a paper boy when he was in the third grade. He was always proud of the fact that the paper distributor gave him a key so he could pick up his papers in the jewelry store.

When Duane was 14 years old he started work as a soda jerk at the local Walgreen's store. He had hope of becoming a pharmacist but found out how much chemistry he had to take.

When Duane graduated high school he enrolled at Western Illinois College. After a year he enlisted in the Army. While serving in the Army he was in the 1st Infantry Division Band while stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. Upon return from Germany Duane attended Southern Illinois, at Carbondale on the GI Bill for three years. Duane worked at the Western Cartridge Company in Alton, while attending Southern Illinois Alton campus part time.

The night before Duane was to marry Ann he was hired as a policeman in Jerseyville. He continued his education part time. To graduate the family had to move to Carbondale for the last semester. After graduation in June 1962, they moved to Fairfield, California. Duane started teaching at Travis Elementary School that fall. During that summer he carried mail in Fairfield and worked several years as a extra postman during the summer and holidays. Duane also taught shop at Golden West School for 27 years.

He enjoyed bowling on the Knights of Columbus Fraternal League. Duane was past Grand Knight, former District Deputy and past Faithful Navigator in the Knights of Columbus as well as an over 40 year member of Council 3585.

The family enjoyed camping near Downieville on the north fork of the Yuba River for many summers. They traveled as a family across the US with their trailer and motor home. Later Duane and Ann enjoyed the river boat trips on the Mississippi and in Europe on the Rhine, Main and Danube.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Brian, Michelle (Keith) Rippee; four grandchildren, Briana, Travis (Brandalen), Baylee and Taylor Rippee; great-grandchildren, Ashcelan and Bentley Berthoux.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean; brothers, Dale, Darel, Dann; sister, Doris.
