ST. PAUL — Alice M. Bartle, 79, of St. Paul died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Ellen Campbell will officiate, with Phillip LaRoe assisting. Auxiliary rites will be held at the church by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 Auxiliary of St. Paul. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Mrs. Bartle was born May 6, 1923, on the family farm near Farwell to Chris and C. and Hilda H. Christensen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward "Bud" F. Bartle, on June 11, 1995.

Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret and Terry Wittler of Lincoln and Elizabeth Bartle of Los Angeles; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Barbara Bartle of Lincoln and John and
Alison Bartle of Utica, N.Y.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Max and Marge Christensen of Fremont.

Other survivors include seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Alice received her early education at rural school District 47 near Nysted. She then attended St. Paul High School and graduated in 1940. After her education, Alice was a nanny in California. She later returned to Nebraska and was an office nursing assistant for Dr. Arnold at St. Paul.

On Aug. 18, 1946, Alice was united in marriage to Edward "Bud" F. Bartle at St. Paul. The couple first made their home in Lincoln. Later, Alice and Bud returned
to St. Paul, where they operated the Bartle's Store. Alice lived in the family home until November 2001, when she moved to the Matelyn Retirement Community.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Howard County Historical Society, Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 Auxiliary and Chapter AP, PEO, all in St. Paul.

She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, singing in the church choir, dancing, embroidering and doing puzzles.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George Christensen; and four sisters, Grace Jensen, Mildred Nelson, Sylvia Ibsen and Katherine Crha.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul First Presbyterian Church or the Howard County Historical Society.
