Robert R Taylor was a resident of Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa, when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Mar. 13, 1862 at the age of 36 years. He was promoted to Full Assistant Surgeon on Nov. 7, 1862 and served with the regiment in the field until Sept. 1862. He mustered out on Oct. 22, 1862.

Taylor was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Volunteers Medical Staff Infantry Regiment on Nov. 7 1862. He was promoted to Full Surgeon on Apr. 13, 1863 and to Brevet Lt Colonel on Mar. 16 1866. He mustered out on Mar. 20, 1866.
