MRS. HULL, SISTER OF ALBANIAN, BURIED
Burial of Mrs. Carrie Gibson Hull, sister of the late Charles Gibson of Albany, was yesterday in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, following funeral services in the Reformed Church of that city.
Mrs. Hull Is survived by three sons. J. Franklin. Stanley O. and C. Amory Hull; a stepdaughter, Mrs. John C Cobb, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Mitchell of Albany and Mrs. Charles Humphrey of Delmar.
After the death of her husband, former Mayor J. Frank Hull of Poughkeepsie, 20 years ago, Mrs.
Hull had managed the Dutchess Manufacturing Company, which in prosperous years did an annual business of $3,000,000.
A short time ago she asked that when she died the plant be kept running, except during the funeral, as she did not want the 300 workers to be deprived of even, a single day's wages.
Additional Info:
From all accounts - Carrie G. Hull was an amazing business woman, she had over 800 employees (75% women) as President of the largest overalls (men's trousers) manufacturing company in the US (Dutchess Manufacturing Co.) at one time. The various newspaper reports state that in 1921 she purchased a resort at Upton Lake for her employees for use all year round. She purchased land so that her employees could grow their own vegetables. However, after running the business for 26 years since her husband's death in 1907, the Great Depression starting after the 1929 stock market crash, took a toll affecting business reducing it's size to less than half it's size of earlier years by the time of her death.
