Walter was the seventh of nine children born to Meredith D. and Isabell C. (Kirkman) Kivett. He married Barbara Elizabeth Caviness in 1897 and they were the parents of ten children: Jerry Jackson, Connie Hazel, Romie Edgar, James Rezzie, Alma Rosa, Walter Lewis, Thomas Grady, David Theodore, Cecil Astor and John Calvin.
