Joy Swenson was born September 22, 1930 to Reed and Gladys Afton Smith Thorpe in Salt Lake City, Utah. She passed away peacefully October 11. Joy was a proud graduate of Granite High and the University of Utah where she served as president of Phi Mu Sorority.

Joy taught at Sandy Elementary where she met and married Clifford LaMar Swenson July 31, 1953. They had four daughters.

Joy went back to teaching at John C. Fremont where she worked with the finest faculty and students in Granite District.

A voracious reader, there wasn't anything about Utah history or geology she didn't know or mystery series she hadn't read. She kept up with politics and voted for the last time Saturday. She was a great friend never caring about race, religion, or economic status. She dearly loved swimming laps for most of her life. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in Primary, Relief Society, and Sunday School.

Her courage and good humor dealing with her nearly lifelong fight with polio and its aftermath were inspirational to all. Thanks to her many friends and caring aides at The Wellington and Emeritus.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Reeda Afton Thorpe. She is survived by Anita (Rick) Leimbach, Elise Swenson, Marla Joy Sommer, and Kristin (Tom) Bonacci, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held October 15th at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State St., at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm and 10:00-10:45 am before the funeral. Burial will be at Elysian Burial Gardens. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/saltlaketribune/obituary.aspx?pid=176089414#sthash.7qcL4FLo.dpuf
