Edmond was the son of Francis "Frank" and Mary (Powers) Bemis.

Edmond F. Bemis of 62 Columbia St., Swampscott, retired New England deputy director of the U.S. Department of Commerce, died today at Lynn Hospital following a short illness. He was 60.

Bemis, a native of Worcester, had lived in Swampscott for 32 years. He was graduated from the Massachusetts Nautical School, class of 1919, and Georgetown University, class of 1926.

He began his career with the Sprague Steamship Co. of Lynn and worked for the Navy Hydropgraphic Department in Washington, D.C. Later he taught at both Georgetown and Boston Universities.

In 1928, he joined the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce in the U.S. Department of Commerce. He retired as New England deputy director three months ago.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a commander in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of St. John's Holy Name Society, Leon S. Abott Post, American Legion. He was director and chairman of the board of the Foreign Commerce Club of Boston and the New England Export Club.

He leaves his wife, Rose S. (Bolger) Bemis; two sons, Edmond F., Jr. of LaLina, Honduras and Donald J. of Santa Marta, Columbia, employees of the United Fruit Co.

He also leaves four daughters, Mrs. Walter Crowley, Somerville, the Misses Mary R., Katherine C. and Rosemond C., all of Swampscott; a brother, Warren T.; two sisters, Miss Marguerite Bemis and Mrs. Eileen Hayes, all of Lynn; and two grandchildren.

A solemn requiem Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott, with burial in Swampscott Cemetery.
