Donald A. Gibson, Jr.
1935-2015
DONALD A. GIBSON JR., nicknamed "Hoot Gibson", 79, passed away on October 8, 2015. He was the only son of the late Donald A. Gibson Sr. and the late Beulah Eason Gibson. He was born on November 7, 1935, and was a Roman Catholic. He was a conservative Republican, and very proud of his loving family and of having many friends throughout his long lifetime.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Georgia Vasicek Gibson; by his son, Michael David Gibson and wife Ana Collado; by his daughter Joan Gay and husband Landrum G. Gay III. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Chase Ryan Gay, Connor Riley Gay, and Sofia Rachel Gibson, whom he loved dearly.
Don was a former resident of Southern California, Houston's Woodland Heights where he grew up, also Bellaire, TX, and Richmond, TX where he resided at the time of his death. He attended Houston schools and universities in Texas. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and also was a long-time member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve after that.
Don was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond, TX. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a Sir Knight in Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree. He was a life member of the Houston Police Officers Association (now HPOU), a member of the Houston Police Retired Officers Association, a life member of the First Marine Division Association, and also a member of the American Legion.
He served 24 years in the Houston Police Department, retiring in 1984 with the rank of lieutenant. He also served 10 years as an investigator with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, retiring in 1995. He later worked at Toshiba International Corporation before retiring altogether.
Don was an avid reader, a former football and baseball player and coach, and played golf in his younger years. He was a lifetime sports fan, mostly of the University of Texas, the University of Notre Dame, the Houston Texans, and the Houston Astros. His loving wife and family, sports, and the military were of utmost importance to him, as well as his love for his Lord Jesus Christ, and his Catholic faith.
Friends are invited to the visitation on October 11, 2015 between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., rosary at 5:00 p.m., at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be held on October 12, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 507 South Fourth St., Richmond, TX, with a graveside service following mass at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg, Texas. Reception to follow the burial at the Family Life Center, Sacred Heart Church.
