Member of Vermont National Guard, serving first with the Ransom Guards of St. Albans. By 1897, he had achieve the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During the War with Spain, he mustered in as Lt. Colonel of the First Regiment, Vermont Volunteers in April 1898. He held several positions until being appointed Chief of Staff by W.W. Stickney. He mustered out in 1908.
