Lewie was released from his earthly journey and is now whole again rejoicing in the glorious presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was born July 30, 1926 to Lyle and Betty Roberts. Lewie accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a young boy and followed Him fervently all of his life. He graduated from Portage Agricultural High School in June of 1943. Lewie served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific theater and later in occupied Japan. After military service, he returned home to the family farm in Portage. Lewie met Jackie Hill at Lake Center Bible Church and they were married November 5, 1947. He and Jackie formed a home building company in the early 1950's and together built over 2500 homes in the greater Kalamazoo area until their retirement in 2008. They specialized in starter homes for young families. Lewie was active in the Kalamazoo Home Builders Association for many years serving in a variety of leadership roles. He was also active in Christian service for many years at Bethel Baptist Church in the Sunday School program, deacon board and missions. Until recent years, he also served on the board of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church for the past 15 years. He loved to fish and especially looked forward to deer hunting season each year. Lewie was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Betty Roberts; sister Hollis; brothers Lyle and Larry. He was also preceeded in death by a grandson, Andrew. Lewie is survived by his wife Jackie of 67 years and their six children and spouses, Ginnie and Dick Mann, Lewie and Mara Roberts, Gary and Denise Roberts, Peggy and Ron Shepard, Wendy and Kevin Mazer and Todd and Amy Roberts. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; brothers, Charlie (Judy) Roberts, David (Leslie) Roberts; his sister, Bonnie; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, November 15 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Visitation will be Friday November 14 from 6:00 –8:00pm and Saturday from 10:00-11:00am prior to the service. Burial will be in the Schoolcraft cemetery. Memorial gifts may be designated to Berean Baptist Church for the Togo Medical Mission in West Africa.
