On March 25, 1854 Polly married the widower Joseph Elzie Hays in Russell County. I believe that his first wife Sophia died the day after giving birth to his first daughter Sophia. Sophia Sr's death record has in the past been misread, but closer scrutiny has her as having died October 14, 1853. Joseph Elzie's first daughter Sophie was born October 13. Later records have Sophia as having been born in 1855 to his second wife Mary Ann "Polly" Coffey, but I believe that there exists at least a possibility that Sophia's birth year may have been adjusted to fit with her being Polly's daughter, since Polly had raised Sophia since infancy. The 1860 shows their next child Hiram as being only one year old. And Joseph's obituary in the local newspaper states that Sophia was the child of his first wife.
Either way, Mary and Joseph were also the parents of Hiram Rowe, Mary Ann (Simpson) and Rosaline Owsley. Mary Ann died just weeks after the birth of daughter Rosaline.
