Loving and beloved mother, sister, Lillie Mae (Wigfall) Sanders, age 76, of Washington, D.C., widow of Mr. Grady M. Sanders, Sr., answered the Master’s call on September 26, 2015.
She was born to Mr. Archie and Mrs. Mattie Wigfall on September 11, 1939, in Washington, D.C.
She attended Washington, D.C. Public School system. After a long working relationship with the Federal Government, she retired to lead a life of contentment with her family nearby. Her faith in God was evident and shared with her family and others who took the time to listen as she spoke about her Lord and Saviour.
She was married for over 25 years before her husband’s passing. She was a member of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, under the Pastoralship of Rev. Dr. Leamon White; she later joined the fellowship of believers at St. Mary’s Baptist Church, under the Pastoralship of Rev. Dr. Darryle R. Crump where she held membership and served as an usher and a choir member till her passing on September 26, 2015, at her home with her daughter, Marionette E. Sanders, who was her caregiver.
Her life showed a dedication toward loving and caring for others and was a stern and tender person to all and in particular to her children, to whom she was dedicated. She also aided in the care and rearing of her grandchildren, as any mother would do. She was not someone who sought the limelight but she would always work in the background giving a helping hand.
She leaves behind three sons, Rayford Sanders, Charles Sanders, Sr., (wife Theresa), Grady Sanders, Jr. (wife Cherette), two daughters, Marionette E. Sanders and Mattie M. Sanders (in memory – Pamela (Debra) D. Sanders and Stephanie R. Sanders). Mrs. Sanders also leaves behind a sister, Addie Edwards, special sisters-in-law, Marionette S. Daniels of Washington, D.C. and Rubye C. Sanders (the late Dr. J. W. Sanders, Sr.) of Gaffney, South Carolina; close cousins, Pernell and Orlean Johnson, with whom she grew up and many other cousins and relatives, and a loving bunch of grandsons and granddaughters, nieces and nephews, two of whom are Dr. J. W. Sanders, Jr. and Mrs. Jewette S. Patterson (Roger) of Gaffney, and a few great grands and many friends.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 5 at Saint Mary’s Baptist Church, 8008 Eastern Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC, with Reverend Kendrick A. Anderson officiating.
