Evan was the youngest of three children. His brother, Arthur was 15 years older and his sister, Cecilia was 10 years older. He was born in Irvington, New York and moved with his family to Chicago as a boy. He attended high school in Chicago. Frank Huckin, the husband of his sister, Cecilia, was in politics and helped Evan get a job with the state of Illinois working in Springfield. It was in Springfield that he met his wife, Catherine Shaughnessy (Marmillion). After their marriage, they moved to Chicago and lived in a building owned by Evan’s father. His father operated a grocery store in the building. In the 1950’s they built a new house in Niles, Illinois where they spent most of their adult lives. As a young adult, Evan was involved with a drama group. He spent a number of years working in a specialty food market in Evanston, Illinois. When company came, Evan’s specialty was pickled Herring.
