Tisha Albertson Shoemaker
Dedicated educator sailed the Caribbean
Tisha A. Shoemaker of Millville, passed away on Nov. 3, 2011. Born on April 12, 1943, in Bloomsburg, Tisha was the daughter of Mildred and Bill Albertson and is survived by her two daughters: Tara Shoemaker Holdren and her husband, Chad; and Tiffany Shoemaker and her husband, Steffen Temple; her former husband, Bruce Shoemaker; her brother, Billy Albertson; and four grandchildren: Kelly, Will, Graham and Emery Sage.
Tisha's lifelong love of learning began at Millville High School and continued on through higher education at Dickinson College, Bloomsburg University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Marywood University. Her passions included playing piano, speaking Spanish and enjoying Spanish culture. Tisha studied and traveled in Spain, South America and Europe. She dedicated her career to education and taught Spanish at the Bloomsburg Christian School and Benton High School. An accomplished pianist, Tisha also taught private lessons in her home and directed the adult choir at Shiloh Bible Church and at the Millville United Methodist Church (Mill-Green) for 10 years.
After retirement, Tisha traveled extensively by sailboat in the Caribbean for five years, playing the pan drum at Carnival in Trinidad and enjoying the cultural diversity of the region. She returned to the United States and built a home in St. Simons Island, Ga., where she taught Spanish at St. Francis Xavier and was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2002. Tisha also traveled to Honduras to serve as an interpreter for mission work and was a member of the Frederica Methodist Church on St. Simons Island.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Tisha's life at a memorial service at the Mill-Green United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to create an award for a Millville High School senior pursuing a career in foreign language, international studies or music. Donations for the Tisha Shoemaker Memorial Award may be sent to the First Columbia Bank and Trust, 125 S. State St., Millville, PA 17846.
