James and/or his father were building a mill on the Salt River about 1816 in Ralls County. He married Mary "Polly" See in September 1822. He died intestate, his wife sued the entire family to iron out difficult issues concerning her rights and the rights of the rest of the family. Half of the family was in Missouri at the time of his death [Mother Mary, William, Benjamin Jr., Margaret and Nancy]. The other half was in Virginia in 1822 at the time of his death [Benjamin, Thomas, Joseph and his wife, Mary and her husband John Bennett, Elizabeth widow of Benjamin Ellis]. Most of them arrived in Missouri in 1824, Joseph stayed behind in Ohio, Elizabeth was taking care of her children and settling her husband's estate, Mary and her husband John Bennett came later.

His mother, Mary, was living with James at the time of his death, while her husband Benjamin was in Virginia selling his property.

James had a very large and complicated probate record, the first one filed at the courthouse.
Maybe someday I will be able to find out why he died.
