LEAWOOD, Kan. — Byron S. McDaniel, 97, of Leawood died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015.

Services were at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, Mo. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Darrouzett, Texas. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton, Texas.

Mr. McDaniel was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Tipton, Mo. He married Bette McDaniel in 1948 in Country Club Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol.

The family suggests memorials be to Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64113.

Byron S. McDaniel

Byron S. McDaniel, 97, of Leawood, Kansas passed away on September 30, 2015 at Brookdale Overland Park Glenwood Senior Living. Byron was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1918, is [sic] Tipton, Missouri.

He was the second oldest of eight children. He had three brothers and four sisters. He was a seventh generation Missourian, and he was the past president of the Alexander Majors Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Byron was drafted into the armed services while he was attending the University of Missouri. He spent five years as a navigator in the Air Force. After service in 1946, he graduated Mizzou with a degree in Agricultural Journalism. His first job was interviewing ranchers for the Kansas City Drovers Telegram. Later on Byron received his Master of Science degree at the Air War College. After spending time in Selective Service, he retired with the status of Lieutenant Colonel.

He married his future bride at the Country Club Christian Church in 1948, Bette McDaniel, and they had their reception at the Watkins Woolen Mill. This October would be their sixty-eighth anniversary. Byron had three children: Scott B., 1950-2014; Anne, 1955-1993, and Carol. Byron lived in Kansas City for most of his life working for printing companies; he retired in 1984 from Constable-Hodgins as the Comptroller. Byron belonged to many organizations including, Salt and Pepper Club, and was its 43rd President. He was a member of the Military Order of World Wars and served as its Commanding Officer from 1987-1988, where he introduced into the Fort Leavenworth Military Hall of Fame, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.

Byron served as a Deacon to the Country Club Christian Church for many years. He also served on the Budget Advisory Council, the Pastoral Care Council, and was the Chairman of Shut-In Communion.

Two of Byron's most memorable commissions were to serve Senator Nancy Kassenbaum as a Senior Intern for a week in 1911 in Washington, D.C. and to serve the Watkins Mill Association located in Kearney, Missouri as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Funeral Services will be held at the Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri 64113. Visitation will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Country Club Christian Church. He will be buried in Darrouzett, TX on Friday, October 9, 2015. Memori Contributions may be made to the County Club Christian Church, Kansas City, Missouri.

Arrangements are made by the Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS.
