Ruth Ellen Carter Yates' earthly journey ended Monday, Oct. 5, 2015. Ruth has entered the gates of heaven and is now smiling down on her family and friends after 91 years on this earth.
Ruth Ellen Carter Yates was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Littlefield, Lamb County, to David Parker Carter and Carrie Mable Brooks Carter. Ruth was one of nine siblings and graduated from Carter Riverside High School, Fort Worth.
Ruth married Glenn Roland Yates on Nov. 27, 1942. The Yateses were married 65 years before Glenn's death May 2, 2007.
Ruth was a resident at The Stayton At Museum Way in Fort Worth for four years. Ruth was a lifetime member of the award-winning gospel group The Chuck Wagon Gang, which was started by D.P. (Dad) Carter in 1935. Ruth retired from touring with the Chuck Wagon Gang in 1995. This year, The Chuck Wagon Gang is celebrating 80 years of music and has sold over 40 million albums. Ruth started singing at age 16 on the WBAP Radio Show for 15 years. Ruth resumed full-time recording and touring in 1979, singing alto. The Chuck Wagon Gang appeared at Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl and Grand Ole Opry and have been included in the Smithsonian Institution of Classic American Recordings. The Chuck Wagon Gang was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tenn., in 1998 and was named the Gospel Group of the Year for 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993 by the TNN/Music City News Awards. The Chuck Wagon Gang was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992 for its album "Still Rollin." The family is grateful for the loving care given to Ruth Ellen by all her special caregivers the past 17 years and Asana Hospice.
Survivors: Ruth Ellen is survived by her children, Glenn Roland Yates Jr. and wife, Tamera, Judith Elaine Yates McKnight and husband, Travis, Beverly Anne Yates Reilly and husband, Michael, and Roy David Yates; sister, Bettye Goodwin; eight grandsons; two stepgranddaughters; and 13 great-grandchildren.
