Mary Theresa Veitch Alexander, born on January 4, 1923, in Mesilla to Ray James Veitch and Erminda Fountain Veitch, later marrying A.D. Alexander on January 12, 1941 in Mesilla's San Albino Catholic Church, passed away at Cotton Bloom Living Assistance Center on August 12, 2006.
Mary and A.D. worked at The United department store for many years, eventually opening Andre's Ladies Apparel on Main Street in Las Cruces. Mary was involved with the Republican Party, Community Concert Membership, the Doña Ana Historical Society, was honored with the "Old Timers" award, the State of New Mexico Bestowed Historical Preservation Award for her continuous support and operation of the Gadsden Museum in Mesilla, as well as being an active member of the San Albino Choir for more than 25 years. Mary became the proprietor of the Gadsden Museum, which features southern New Mexico and Fountain Family history, after the death of the original founder, her aunt, Elizabeth Fountain Armendariz. She was devoted to sharing her knowledge of local history to countless children and adults who came and toured the museum.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, A.D. Alexander, in 1995, sister Elizabeth Veitch McComas, brother Thomas Veitch, her grandsons Jason Alexander (1972), James Alexander (1996), and is survived by her children; Mary (Tancy) Bird of Las Cruces, NM; Eileen Betzen of Lewisville, TX; Andrew Alexander of Española, NM; Christopher Alexander of Mesilla, NM; Debbie and John Phillips of Las Cruces, NM; Greg and Tammy Alexander of Farmington, NM; Kathy and Tom Foster of Mesquite, TX.

Grandchildren: Michael and Keith Bird, Steven and Lisa Bird, Shanna and Tiffany Betzen, Brian and Chad Alexander, Dawn Alexander, Duane and Michelle Phillips, Crystal Phillips, Joseph, Jonathan and Judith Alexander, Andrew and Hannah Foster.

Great Grandchildren: Rico and Shanty Gallegos, Micha Hernandez, Steven and David Bird, and Daganet Stern.

Sisters: Rosalie Rader, Mabel Mora, Jean and husband Frank Kumbusky, Lorraine and husband Marion Harvey, and one brother, Ray Veitch. Mary also had many nieces, nephews and cousins which are still living.

Visitation for Mrs. Alexander will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2006 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Family and friends will join together to celebrate the Funeral Liturgy at 9 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2006 in San Albino Catholic Church in Mesilla with Monsignor Robert Getz, Celebrant. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the San Albino Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Serving as casket bearers will be family members.

Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces, 527-2222.
