Arnold, Fred English age 77, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 at Barnes Hospital where he had been treated for a recent illness. Prior to his death, he lived in St. Louis and Naples, Florida. Fred was born on May 10, 1938, in Mexico MO, the son of the late Charles Pleasant Arnold Jr. and the late Mary Ellen Blackman Arnold. A fifth generation Mexicoan, he grew up in Mexico where his father ran the Arnold Funeral Home. In 1956, Fred traveled to Cambridge, MA, to attend Harvard College. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree, cum laude. While in college he was an editor for The Harvard Crimson and served as the Harvard stringer for The New York Times. He continued on to Harvard Law School where he earned an Ll.B. in 1963. Following a brief stint in the U.S. Army, he joined the law firm of Thompson Mitchell Douglas & Neill in 1964 as an associate. He was made a partner in 1971 and served in that role for 35 years. At the time of his death, he was senior counsel with the firm, now known as Thompson Coburn LLP. During his long tenure with the firm, he served in a number of leadership roles, including service on the firm's management committee and co-chairing the corporate department. He was widely respected as a brilliant and creative counselor and a trusted colleague and mentor. He was included in the Best Lawyers in America since the publication's inception. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Fred was devoted to community service. He served as a trustee for the The Mary Ranken Jordan and Ettie A. Jordan Charitable Foundation for more than 40 years, during which time he became involved in a broad array of arts and education charities. He chaired the boards of Whitfield School and the Harvard Club of St. Louis and served on the boards of Central Methodist University, the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, Arts and Education Council, Mary Institute, KETC, the Noonday Club and the Harvard Club of Naples. Fred was preceded in death by his dear wife JoAnn who died while they were on a cruise off the coast of Thailand in January this year. He is survived by his children, Jane Arnold, Charles (Kate) Arnold and Susan (Drew) Kimball, his stepdaughter Elisabeth (Brian) McCabe, and ten grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his sister Ellen Wikle. Services: Visitation will be from 48pm at Lupton Chapel in University City, on Friday, October 9. Funeral services will be at 10am on Saturday, October 10, at Salem United Methodist Church in Ladue, with interment to follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery. A reception will be held immediately following the burial at the Racquet Club Ladue. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, 130 Edgar Rd, St. Louis, MO 63119. A SERVICE OF LUPTON CHAPEL
