He was born March 4, 1930, in Boone, Iowa, to Lowell and Mattie Handy Bowen. He was raised by his mother and stepfather Francis Bailey. He married Bertha Smith on June 22, 1963.
He had worked for John Morrell and Company for 25 years and 22 years for Acco Babcock, retiring in 1995.
Fred enjoyed helping with his son and grandsons Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha; a son, David (Cindy) Bowen of Eldon; two daughters, Candy (Bill) Musgrove and Bobbie Bowen, both of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Will, Beth, Andrew, Kasey, D.J., Kari and Melissa; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth McMasters of Moss Point, Mississippi; three brothers, Warren (Helen) Bowen of San Antonio, Texas, Wayne and Clyde “Laverne” Bowen, both of Ottumwa.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor David Klanderman officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
