NEWTON - Jack Thomas Burroughs of Newton died and was welcomed into heaven on Saturday, May 1, 2010. He was 93-years-old.

Jack was born Dec. 28, 1916, in Jackson County, Ga., to the late Ada Seagraves Burroughs and Jett Thomas Burroughs and was married for 58 years to the late Mary Lucille Grigg Burroughs.

As a young man, Jack was a star football player and also played semi-pro baseball. He was an avid hunter and sportsman and often made trips out west with his sons to hunt.

Jack was a charter member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Newton and was a textile supervisor for many years. He was a retired employee from Carolina Mills in Newton and also a U.S. Naval veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, four sisters and one brother.

Surviving are his daughters, Mrs. Brenda Barker of Gastonia and Mrs. Diane Huffman and husband, David of Newton; three sons, Mr. Tommy Burroughs and wife, JoAnn of Hoschton, Ga., Mr. Randy Burroughs and friend, Ruth Sanders of Newton; and Mr. Kim Burroughs and wife, Sabrina of Greensboro; grandchildren, Lori Burroughs of Avondale Estates, Ga., John Burroughs of Dacula, Ga., Scott Barker and wife, Amy of Hixson, Tenn., Kelly Barker Sutton and husband, Chris of Gastonia, Greg Barker and wife, Nikki of Gastonia, Julie Burroughs Kisser and husband, Darrel of Newton, Jeanna Burroughs Goodson and husband, Todd of Pumpkin Center, J.R. Burroughs and wife, Debbie of Pumpkin Center, Tammy Huffman West and husband, Peter of Newton, Dawn Huffman Wagstaff of Birmingham, Ala., Dana Huffman Greene of Newton, Tina Huffman Starnes and husband, Lynn of Conover, Caitlin and Cassie Burroughs of Greensboro; 25 great–grandchildren; a sister, Joan Gore of Kings Mountain; and a special friend and caregiver, Joyce Punch of Newton.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Willis Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with the Rev. Peter West officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park.
