Opera Singer. A tenor, he is remembered for his two decade career in major venues on both sides of the Atlantic. Born Franz Pogacnik, he was trained in his home city as well as in Vienna prior to his 1888 professional debut in Frankfurt as Lyonel from von Flotow's "Martha". Over the course of his career, Mr. Naval was attached to the Berlin State Opera, though he spent some time with the Vienna State Opera, his tenure there limited by conflicts with Maestro Gustav Mahler, and during the 1903-1904 season travelled to New York for a number of appearances with the Metropolitan Opera. His roles were to include several repertoire staples, among them Riccardo of Verdi's "Un Ballo en Maschera", Turiddu from Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana", the dimwitted Nemorino of Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore", Alfredo in Verdi's "La Traviata", Don Jose from Bizet's "Carmen", and the title leads of Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" and "Faust", as well as multiple Lieder pieces. His powers declining, he gradually retired and settled in Vienna where he was a respected voice teacher. Today, most of his recorded legacy is preserved on CD.
