Funeral Services were held on Friday March 8, 1974 at 2pm at the Congregational Church in Peterson for Joseph Daniel Batcheler.
Joseph Daniel Batcheler, the son of Joseph and Ella Carpenter Batcheler, was born on Dec. 10, 1894 near Royal in Clay County, la. He was educated in schools near his childhood home.
He was united in marriage to Louise Schumacher on Oct. 12, 1920 at Spencer, la. The couple farmed near Royal until 1922 when they moved to a farm in Cherokee County that was near Peterson. They retired and built a home in Sutherland, Iowa in 1951.
He entered service July 26, 1918 at Spencer, la., and served with the United States Army. His overseas service was in England and France from Oct. 3, 1918 until May 25,1919. During part of that time he was in the battle of Meuse Argonne. He received his honorable discharge June 2 , 1919 at Camp Dodge, Ia.
He became a member of the American Legion, first at Peterson and later with Post #152 at Sutherland, 1a.
He passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Ia. on March 5, 1974 at the age of 79.
Preceding him in death were his parents, six brothers, Alfred, Burt, Lewis, Everette, Clarence and Nathan; four sisters, Julia Lan, Cora Joenks, Clara Webster, and Florence Lewis.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Louise and one sister Mrs. Josie Anderson of Peterson, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Rev. Allen Dumke was the officiating clergyman.
Pallbearers Melvin Joenks, Ted Kosta, Clarence Anderson, Wendell Webster, Wesley Batcheler and Loyd Batchler.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Tigges were in charge of the flowers.
Military Services were conducted by the Sutherland American Legion Post No. 152 with Commander Merle Haye Color bearers were Burton Brown and Dick Hicks. Color guards were John Engelke and Don Waggoner. Del Johannsen was in charge of the Firing Squad and Donald Segelke was Chaplain.
Burial was made at the Oakland Cemetery near Peterson with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
