Carl Frank Brewer passed away at age 89 on Sept. 23, 2014, in Naples, Fla., surrounded by his loving wife, Genevieve, and family members.

Carl was born on Sept. 18, 1925, in Plainfield, N.J., to Leroy and Martha Brewer. He attended Plainfield High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 at age 17, serving with the 7th Fleet during the Philippines campaign in the South Pacific in World War II. Carl was recalled to active duty in 1951 during the Korean War and served until 1953.

That same year, he opened Raritan Valley Plumbing Supply in Somerville, N.J., with first wife, Mildred Brewer. Raritan Valley, along with the later expansion of a first-of-its- kind bathroom showroom, would have a successful run for 33 years.

Carl was a very generous man with a strong commitment to family, friends and community. If you needed a hand with something, Carl would lend you two. He was the same way toward customers, opening on weekends when needed and doing installation and repair work himself in order to get a job done right.

After selling the company in 1986, Carl would "retire" to Naples, Fla., and start a second career as a real estate agent.

Carl was a member of the Somerville area Jaycees and was on the board of directors for the Somerset Medical Center, the Somerset Valley YMCA, and the Somerville United Methodist Church. He was a volunteer fireman at West End Hose No. 3, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Crescent Valley Shriners and the Valley of Trenton Scottish Rite.

Carl was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Kenneth and Lawrence; sister, Eva, and first wife, Mildred. He is survived by wife, Genevieve Brewer, of Naples, Fla.; his daughter in Salem, Ore.; his son and daughter-in-law in Flemington, N.J.; two stepsons; four grandchildren; a step grandchild, and two great-grandchildren.

His obituary was published in The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ) on September 28, 2014.
