THE DEATH OF JUEL ABNEY
Juel Paul Abney, 19, WPA worker of 1019 North Sixth street, ended his life late yesterday by swallowing three ounces of carbolic acid in a half cup of coffee in the restaurant conducted at No. 5 North Fourth street by Oscar W. Warnock, Jr. Police seized the cup from which the youth drank the fatal portion and Coroner H. E. Klepinger launched an inquiry to determine what led up to the tragedy. Police questioned Mrs. Lena Lebman, 244 South Fourth street, restaurant waitress who served Abney. She said that the youth purchased a cup of black coffee, drank half of it and ordered a piece of pie. When she served the pie, she said she noticed the coffee cup was full, but only supposed the youth had poured in some water. He ate the pie, drank the contents of the cup, left his seat, staggered to the front door and collapsed, she said. Supposing the youth was sick, restaurant workers carried him to the kitchen and opened the door to give him some air. Police was called and Paul Klinker and Matthew Oley, radio squad car officers, responded and rushed him to St. Elizabeth hospital, where he died in the emergency room a few minutes later. An empty three-ounce bottle bearing the label of a local drug store was found in the boy's pocket, police reported. Police last night they leaned Abney had quarreled with a girl. Coroner Klepinger said he would render a verdict of suicide. The dead youth was born in Lebanon, Jan. 12, 1917, the son of Warren and Zora (Arnold) Abney, who survive. He also leaves three sisters, Stella, of Peoria, ILL., and Letha and Louis, both of Lafayette. The body was removed to the Soller-Baker funeral home. Funeral services Juel Paul Abney, 1019 North Sixth street, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Soller and Baker funeral home, with Dr. George Arch Ritchey, of the First Baptist church, officiating. Interment in Rest Haven Memorial park. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 o'clock Friday morning.
