Heart Throbs of the West, Kate B. Carter, Vol. 5, p. 346

In October 1870, the Second Judicial District of Utah Territory, comprising of counties Beaver, Iron, Washington, Kane, Garfield and Piute, was established with headquarters at Beaver. While the Judge and his family became permanent residents of the town, many others, as lawyers, jurors, witnesses, etc., flocked into Beaver and created a demand for rooming and boarding houses. This continued until Utah was admitted to statehood in 1896. During these years Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Betenson, who lived two blocks north of the Beaver Co-op, added a few rooms to their one-story adobe house to provide rooms and board for the court men, and for men who were interested in the mines in the vicinity.
