John Adam Engelhardt, 77, of West Germania Street, Newtown, died Wednesday in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township.

He was born on Aug. 12, 1929, in Hunlock Creek, son of the late William and Julia Englehart. He was a post-World War II veteran, Korean War veteran and a Vietnam War veteran.

John was honorably discharged and retired after more than 20 years of service on Dec. 31, 1967. He also retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

He served in the Special Forces with the 82nd Airborne Division and received one Silver and one Bronze Service Star and the Korean Service Medal. He also received two Bronze Service Stars and the Vietnam Service Medal, and one Bronze Star and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the 82nd Airborne Association, member of the American Legion Post 673, Korean War Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5267, Coalville Lodge 474, Scottish Rites of Tennessee, Irem Shriners, Wyoming 1 Order of the Eastern Star and the Past Matrons/Patrons of Luzerne County. Mr. Engelhardt was a member of St. Clement/St. Peter Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, William and James; sisters, Gloria and Viola.

Surviving are his wife of 56½ years, the former Gloria Alsheimer; sons, David and his wife, Marion, Cape Charles, Va.; Duane and his wife, Judith, Kingston; Dana and his wife, Christine, St. Louis, Mo.; Dirk and his wife, Julie, Swedesboro, N.J.; grandchildren, John, Jazmyn, Julian, Jamison, Jordan, Jyllian, Anthony, Jacqueline, Danielle, Heidi and Ian; great-grandchildren, Keaira, Stephanie and Cody; brothers, Ralph, Earl, Albert and Henry.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Clement/St. Peter Episcopal Church, 165 Hanover St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
