He was wounded by gunshot to both legs during the attack on the Lower (Burnside's) Bridge at Antietam on 17 September 1862. "He was in command of his Company [G] in the battle, and after he was wounded and unable to stand, sat down behind his men and still retained his command until too faint from the loss of blood."
He was treated at the Locust Spring field hospital near Keedysville, MD and then at US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD. He resigned and was discharged for wounds on 2 March 1863.
