Stephen Rice, 68, of Potomac died at 3 a.m. Friday (Oct. 2, 2015) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Stephen was born on Oct. 21, 1946 in Danville, the son of Evelyn (Saunders) Rice and the late Gordon Albert Rice.

Stephen is survived by four children, Christopher Gordon Rice, Sinead Rice Madigan (Michael P. Madigan), Shaughnessy Dan Rice (Michelle Huls Rice) and Kelly McGrath Rice; sister, Paula Jane Rice and her two children; his brother, Dan Saunders Rice (Lee Ann Davies) and eight grandchildren.

After graduating from Potomac High School, Stephen attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, graduating with a B.S. in photography.

He later joined the Army for two years, mustering out overseas where he traveled and met his wife Elizabeth. He returned stateside to work the family farm and raise his family.

He loved horses and went on to attend Oklahoma Farrier College in Sperry, Okla., matriculating as a Master Farrier. Stephen spent years in California plying his trade. He returned to Potomac and established a thriving farrier business.

Stephen found immense joy in his work. Work was his life and social center. He made new friends easily and always kept in touch with his oldest and dearest friends, sometimes just catching up over a cup of coffee.

Stephen was a lover of local history and genealogy and he enjoyed cemeteries. He was a member of the American Legion Post 428 and Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society.

He had a great passion for NBA basketball and Yankees baseball. Stephen was happiest sharing his interests with others.
