Olga Helen Svoboda was the daughter of Josef Cestimir and Olga Svoboda (nee Nedoma). She passed away from cancer after several months of illness in Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico on February 1, 1979. She had been a resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico since 1945. Her parents preceded her in death. She was survived by one brother, Michael Westbrook Svoboda (Cornelia)(Springfield, Oregon); Aunts Irene Nedoma (Berwyn, Illinois) and Anna Krakoran (Ontario, California); Several nieces and nephews; other family and friends. Memorial Chapel Mortuary assisted the family. Olga grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She was a bright child in school. She attended Stevenson Elementary and Forrest Park School in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. She had perfect attendance in the 7th grade where she attended Betsy Ross School. Olga was mentioned in the book, The Thrill of The Chase, a Memoir by Forrest Fenn, in the Chapter, Tea With Olga, pages 115-117. A sampling follows: "Olga was a delightful woman with a warm and giving heart. She was also too young to be treated with such disrespect by the ungentle laws of nature and she joked about outrunning the well bug." "Although Olga's cancer was insidious and unforgiving by nature, it allowed time for her to reflect and prepare." Olga retired from the Southern Union Gas Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She lived at 441 Acequia Madre, Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to an article in the Santa Fe New Mexican Newspaper on Sunday, May 6, 2012, page Z015, "The Acequia Madre casita was a very small house that was acquired by Forrest Fenn and ultimately incorporated into the Nedra Matteucci Galleries. Not too much is known about it, except that Olga Helen Svoboda was it's last tenant---and Jackie Kennedy stayed there once. El Zaquan built it in the 1800's as the home of Santa Fe Trail trader, James L. Johnson. It's been a home to artists since the 1920's. Today, it houses five artists and serves as the headquarters for the Historic Santa Fe Foundation". Olga's Will hearing was held on January 28, 1980 at the Santa Fe, New Mexico Courthouse before the Honorable Thomas A. Donnelly, District Judge.

Gravesite Details

Taos Mountain is very much the same as it was when Olga's ashes were spread there. It was her wish to have her ashes spread atop Taos Mountain by Forrest Fenn where her father's ashes were spread in 1953.
