funeral service celebrating the life of Francis W. "Frank" Austin, Jr., age 91, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Ray Sunkel of Plymouth Congregational Church officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Mr. Austin passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 at the Price Road Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 25, 1924 in North Olmsted, Ohio to the late Pearl L. (Gibson) Austin and Frank W. Austin, Sr.

Frank served as a deacon of Plymouth Congregational Church for many years and was involved in numerous church activities, echoing the service given to the church by his wife of 64 years, the late Donna Jean (Essig) Austin, as church organist and member of the choir.

Frank was known for his wonderful sense of humor, generous spirit and devotion to his family and friends. He has lived in Newark since moving here in 1951 when he met Donna at OSU and married her. Frank and his family left Newark only for a brief health-inspired sojourn to Tempe, Arizona for several years in the late 1960’s.

Upon their return to Newark, Frank used his skills as a highly trained commercial aviation mechanic to qualify for a career in Inertial Guidance Technology at Newark Air Force Base.

During his life Frank was also an avid supporter of his wife Donna’s professional musical talents. He often traveled with her and recorded her jazz and classical piano performances throughout the Central Ohio area. Frank acquired a strong appreciation for jazz and blues music while growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from West Technical High School in 1943 with an emphasis in aircraft power plant mechanics. His taste for inner city music contrasted with his equally strong love of farm life. During his youth he spent summers working on the family farm of his mother, Pearl (Gibson) Austin, in North Olmsted, Ohio. This developed his life-long love for horse pulls, steam shows, threshing bees and annual pilgrimages to the Hartford Fair in Croton.

Frank attended The Ohio State University where he met Donna, but headed off to the United States Army Air Corps before he could graduate, proudly serving as a flight engineer on C-119’s. A devoted father of two sons, Scott and Tim, he encouraged a strong work ethic and supported their pursuits in jazz music (only as an avocation) as well as their respective careers in law and military aviation.

Survivors include his brother, Jack Austin of North Ridgeville, Ohio; his two sons: Tim, a military aviator, Lt. Colonel, USAF (ret.) of Thornville, and Scott, an intellectual property attorney of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; two grandsons: Alec, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, studying at Hamline University, and Luke, of Columbus, Ohio, studying at The Ohio State University.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Donna J. Austin.
