In 1904, his first book, "Fritz Kochers Aufsätze," appeared in the Insel Verlag. Robert Musil and Kurt Tucholsky, among others, stated their admiration for Walser's prose, and authors like Hermann Hesse or Franz Kafka counted him among their favorite writers. His best known works include "Jakob von Gunten," "The Robber," "Speaking To The Rose: Writings, 1912-1932," "Masquerade and Other Stories," "The Walk and Other Stories," "Kleine Prosa," "Poetenleben" and "Der Gehülfe." Suffering of mental problems, he moved to the sanatorium of Herisau in his home canton Appenzell Ausserrhodene. During a walk, he suffered a heart attack and he was found in a field of snow near the asylum.
