She was born Dorcie Jerelene Bennett, January 18, 1930, to Hollie and Laura Bennett, in Quitman, Arkansas. She had a very happy childhood. Jerelene's family moved to Merced, California when she was in high school. It was there that she met the love of her life, Harold Stepaniak. He would often walk by her house on his way home from work, and Jerelene's mom would have a plate set for him at dinner without ever asking if he would be stopping by that evening. It was just assumed that he would.
Harold and Jerelene were married in Reno, Nevada November 5, 1949. While they lived in California, they had 2 children, Tom and Linda. When jobs became scarce, they decided it was time to move. Their first thought was to move to Alaska, but when they found out that eggs sold for an exorbitant price, they quickly nixed that idea. So they packed their belongings and moved to Kansas where Harold's family had moved years earlier. They settled in Stilwell, and lived there for the next 40 years. While in Stilwell, Harold and Jerelene had 2 more children, Sandy and Paul.
Jerelene accepted Jesus as her savior years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stilwell. She taught Sunday School for years; was a member of ABW; taught VBS and was a Director of VBS. She worked at Blue Valley High School in the cafeteria and later was a bus monitor for Laidlaw.
Not only did Jerelene have 4 children, she unofficially "adopted" several others. She loved her hugs and let you know if you walked by without giving her one.
