It seems probable the marriage occurred in Greene County, Georgia, where Virginia's family was living. In his 23 February 1920 application Silas gave his age as 72y 7m and 10d.

In 1880, Silas and Virginia were living in Morgan County, Georgia with their 4-year old son, Eddie. In 1900, the widowed Silas and their six children were living in Tuscaloosa County; their ages and birthplaces suggest the Atkinson family moved to Alabama between 1883 and 1887.
