Mrs. Myrtle Elkes Owens Porter, 91 went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Thursday, March 28, 2013. Myrtle was born in Wilmington, May 6, 1921, a daughter of the late Peter James Elkes and Lucy Jones Elkes.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elbert Vernon Owens of 21 years and Luther Leonard Porter of 38 years. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Ray, Richard and J. Brandon Owens; a granddaughter, Kristen Ward; two brothers, Jimmy (Earlene) Elkes and Jacky Elkes; three sisters, Patricia Thompkins, Reathea Scarboro and Ruby (Howard) George; sister-in-law, Margaret Elkes.

Myrtle and Elbert moved to Houston, TX in 1953. She went to school for nursing and supported her family after his death in 1958. She was active in the PTA and a member and adult Sunday School teacher at East Houston Baptist Church. In 1969 she moved back to North Carolina where she met Rev. Luther Porter and they married in 1973. She became his helpmate as he pastored and also continued nursing. Myrtle attended Church of the Living Word in Archdale. Myrtle was a wonderful wife, mother, friend and Nana. She will be greatly missed by many.

A Celebration of Myrtle's Life will be held Tuesday, April 2, at 2 p.m. in the Davis Funerals and Cremations Chapel by Kermit Owens and Tonya McKinley. Burial will follow in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 until 9.
