Theron Eusebius Balch was born December 12, 1787 in Mecklenburg Co, NC, a son of William Goodwin Balch and Elizabeth Rodgers. They soon moved to Madison Co, KY, and later Theron's family and also his father William moved to Moulton, Lawrence Co, Alabama by 1820. William died there in 1822.
Theron settled in what is now Bedford Co, TN where he married May 28, 1811 to Alpha Boyd. Theron was in the war of 1812. He was a school teacher and a farmer and was also known as a strong abolitionist. Theron came with his family and also his widowed mother Elizabeth to Coles County in 1829. Here Theron helped establish the Pleasant Prairie Presbyterian church. Theron died in 1838. His wife did not remarry and later moved to Dane Co, WI with several of the children's families settled. She died there in 1881.

Also living in the Balch household was Rhoda Stewart born in 1810, a former slave who had been freed and her son Ephraim born in 1828, a mulatto. Rhoda moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota along with the daughter Alpha Balch Skinner's family after the death of Theron and his wife. Rhoda lived to be over 100 years old.
