TAMAROA - Godfrey Kunkel, 93, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, in Fairview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Du Quoin. Godfrey had been a farmer and had also worked at Blue Bell Packing Company for 20 years. He sold Stein Seeds for several years. Godfrey was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Du Quoin. He was a life long member of the Perry County Farm Bureau and was also on the board of directors for the farm bureau. He was an avid card player, loved to dance and play music on his guitar and harmonica. He was born March 12, 1922, in Du Quoin, the son of Phillip and Anna (Telkemeyer) Kunkel. He married Mildred B. Galloway on Feb. 16, 1944, in Du Quoin, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1999. He is survived by two sons, Donnie Kunkel and wife, Mary, of Du Quoin, and Ed Kunkel and wife, Susan, of Tamaroa; one daughter, Betty Morefield and husband, Robert, of Carbondale; special friend, Virginia Surgalski of Freeman Spur; one sister, Betty Schumaier and husband, Emory, of Pinckneyville; 10 grandchildren, Kim Goforth and husband, Dennis, of Carbondale, Kevin Morefield and wife, Denise, of Las Flores, California, Kristal Bell and husband, Rodney, of Crystal Lake, Kenny Kunkel of Du Quoin, Kerri Hill and husband, Trent, of Washington, Kelli Boss and husband, Adam, of Du Quoin, Kathi Jones and husband, Matt, of Tamaroa, Mary Beth Swallows and Tara of Springfield, Jamie Swallows and wife, Michelle, of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Lee Swallows and wife, Marcy, of Collinsville; 22 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Ronnie Kunkel ; two sisters, Arlene Foster and Louise Norris; and one brother, Bill Kunkel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Earl Menchhofer officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorials to St. John's United Church of Christ in Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.
