New York General Sessions Court judge, and Deputy Commissioner of New York City Fire Department. In 1924 he replaced Charles Francis Murphy as the "Grand Sachem" (leader) of Tammany Hall. He resigned in 1929.

He married Agnes Irene Halpin in her hometown of Ossining, NY at St. Augustine's Church on December 28, 1911.

Their son, George, Jr., attempted suicide at Saranac Lake, NY in 1935. He was brought to NYC for surgery, but died of his self-inflicted gunshot wound.
