David Paul Atherton, 81, of Orlando, Florida passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at his residence.

He was born June 29, 1934 in Amo, Indiana the son of George Ralph and Minerva Jane (Elsbury) Atherton. David received an associate’s degree at Vincennes University. He was a Gunnery Sgt.in the US Marine Corp and served in the Vietnam War. He retired from the US Marine Corp 1976. He was later employed by the State Prison System in Florida as a correctional officer, as well as the Plainfield Youth Center.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He married Alice Jane Cole 10 Aug 1957. David and Jane were baptized into the Church on Christmas Eve, 24 Dec 1960. They spent much of their lives in the service of others, giving their all. They served a Home Mission (the first in the Bloomington Stake) for the church in Terre Haute for one year, about 2003. They worked in the genealogy department as well as with other members. David served as Ward Mission Leader, Young Men's President, counselor in the bishopric, as well as other callings. He served diligently with the missionaries and let them know that he was available day or night...just give him a call. And he meant it. Missionary work was always his favorite calling. He always carried pass-along cards in his shirt pocket. He probably handed out thousands over the years. With a smile he gave them to people he met at a gas station, restaurants (with a tip), and any place he met a stranger. He loved sharing the gospel.
